93 pts - “There’s a heady mix of smoke and bacon fat on this bottling from one of the appellation’s top vineyards, along with baked red cherry and dried fennel, all swirling together in a very appealing manner. The hickory-smoke touches are more reserved on the sip, where tart strawberry mixes with licorice, marjoram and thyme.” Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiat

94 pts - “Black raspberry and blackberry fruit approach a black-cherry richness on the nose of this bottling that also shows aromas of slate and roasted meats. The palate tightens up around dried elderberry and cranberry, tangy but deep fruit flavors that are enhanced by crushed juniper and dried pine needles with earthy tones of clay, loam and slate.” Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiat

The Etude Carneros Pinot Noir is a true reflection of the winery’s estate vineyard, Grace Benoist Ranch. A blend of the best grapes from individual vineyard parcels on the Ranch, this wine tells the story of a particular vintage from a very unique place.

This wine hails from our estate vineyard tucked away in the far Northwest corner of the Carneros appellation. Unlike customary Carneros acreage, which is largely uplifted bay bottoms with soils composed of clay, the soils on Grace Benoist Ranch are variations of volcanic origin. Combining these well-drained, rocky upland soils with the extreme western location closer to the Pacific Ocean make this site an ideal place to grow Burgundian varieties.

Tasting Note:
The 2014 Carneros Estate Pinot Noir intrigues with its rich array of red cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate raspberry and spice. The core of red fruit is made complex with layers of sassafras, sandalwood and baking spice that build in intensity through the finish. With an opulent mouthfeel and ideal natural acidity, the wine has significant substance and depth, yet stays lively and lifting throughout.

The Etude Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is handcrafted with grapes from unique benchland vineyards representing the major sub-appellations of Napa Valley. Exuberant, rich and fruit-driven, this wine is deep and juicy, with plenty of black cherry, black raspberry and blackberry. Mint, black licorice and graham cracker spice add nuance to the core of black fruit in this exceptionally elegant, complex wine. A great example of the exemplary vintage, this 2013 drinks well at this early stage, but is compactly structured with dense tannins to age gracefully over the next decade or so.

Planted during the initial development of the Grace Benoist Ranch in 2000, the grapes for our Heirloom Chardonnay come from shy-bearing selections that produce small bunches and even smaller berries. Extremely low yields are typical of these unique vines, but the resulting wines are both expressive of their origins and the unique and varied site on which they’re grown. The Chardonnay vineyards at Grace Benoist Ranch have deep, well-drained loamy soils, ideal for growing this cool climate varietal. nnay, produced from heirloom selections of the variety, is dedicated to the celebration and preservation of plant diversity. Heirloom plants are horticultural treasures that have been handed down from generation to generation for centuries. Similar to its counterpart, Etude’s Heirloom Pinot Noir, this Chardonnay exemplifies the singular, superior wines – unusually expressive, concentrated and pure – that issue from original varieties or vine selections chosen for the inherent wine quality they produce. Winemaker Jon Priest has always admired the Chardonnay from the Heirloom selections for its elegance, balance and minerality, and this small bottling highlights these unique selections.

Compelling and complex, the 2013 Heirloom Chardonnay offers lush flavors of lemon chiffon, quince and white peach with lifted floral notes of honeysuckle. The elegant fruit remains persistent throughout and is powerful in its freshness. Twenty percent new French oak imparts structure and toasted almond and spice notes rather than an obvious influence, letting the depth of fresh fruit and thread of minerality linger on the long finish.

The Etude Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from our estate vineyard at Grace Benoist Ranch, which is located in the northwest corner of the Carneros appellation. Our Chardonnay vineyards have deep, well-drained cobbly clay loam soils, perfect for growing grapes of exceptional expression. The cooler maritime temperatures at Grace Benoist Ranch provide for a long and even growing season, allowing the fruit to fully ripen in harmony with the vines’ physiological development.

The Grace Benoist Estate vineyard is farmed to Etude’s exacting standards, using environmentally sound viticultural practices. We grow and ultimately harvest focusing on intensity of flavor, strong varietal delineation and ideal natural balance.

Tasting Note:
A pure, distinguished Chardonnay, this is rich and concentrated, yet elegantly vibrant. On the palate, our 2014 Estate Grown Chardonnay offers lemon curd, Bartlett pear, apple and citrus, but the fruit is balanced with acidity and citrus blossom notes, letting this wine be a versatile companion to food. The notable concentration of fruit comes from the low yielding selections and a subtle sur lie note adds nuance and depth.

This wine is crafted from Pinot Blanc grapes grown on our Estate Vineyards at Grace Benoist Ranch. The small vineyard parcel is planted with certified Alsatian clones and the deep, well-drained loamy soils are perfect for grape growing. The cooler temperatures at Grace Benoist Ranch provide for a long and even growing season, allowing the fruit to fully ripen while still preserving natural acidity. Pinot Blanc tends to be the most vigorous and productive of all the Pinot varieties, but the limiting soils of Grace Benoist Ranch and deliberate crop thinning help moderate the cluster size to yield a pure varietal expression.

Tasting Note:
Fresh in Meyer lemon, Honeycrisp apple and crisp Bosc pear, the 2014 Pinot Blanc is beautifully aromatic. The generous fruit flavors are followed by delicate botanical tree blossom notes. The wine has the richness and depth that have become the hallmarks of Etude’s Pinot Blanc with a hint of beeswax and the lightest suggestion of creaminess that is ultimately brightened by striking acidity and balanced with wet stone minerality.

This wine is crafted from grapes grown in two unique vineyards in the Carneros appellation — 74% coming from our Estate Vineyard at Grace Benoist Ranch and the remaining 14% from Cold Creek Vineyard. Certified Alsatian clones are planted in deep, well-drained loamy soils at Grace Benoist Ranch, perfect for grape growing. The cooler temperatures at both vineyards provide for a long and even growing season, allowing the Pinot Gris fruit to fully ripen while still preserving natural acidity.

Tasting Note:
The 2015 Etude Pinot Gris has structural integrity, sheer mouth-filling stone fruit and citrus flavors and balancing acidity. At once the wine is texturally rich, crisp and lively. It shows citrus blossom and powerful but subtle flavors of Mirabelle plum, key lime and apricot that finish fresh and long.
